Susanna Niederer

Susanna is a PlanAdapt Fellow, based in Zurich, Switzerland.

She is an accomplished climate resilience strategist, programme coordinator and project manager in the humanitarian, public and private sector and has been based in Africa, the Middle East, North America and South East Asia.

Currently, she works with the Royal Roads University on a Climate Adaptation Competency Framework (CACF) which aims to illustrate the different breadth of competencies necessary to deal with and prepare for a climate change-altered present and future. The framework also details the central competencies required by someone working as an adaptation specialist or working in a profession or field in which climate concerns and climate adaptation are being integrated. On a regular basis she designs and leads climate resilience workshops for students and leads climate dialogues with various groups.

As the former City of Calgary’s Climate Adaptation Coordinator, she developed and led the Climate Adaptation Action Plan for the City in collaboration with 20 departments and two steering boards. Prior to her Adaptation work, she held a leading position with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) working in over 10 countries. In her early career she worked at IBM, Ogilvy & Mather and start-up companies in various advertising, sales and marketing roles.
She holds a MA in Disaster and Emergency Management (Royal Roads University) a PG Certificate in Environmental Management (University of London) and a Bachelors in Business Administration.
