Gijs van den Dool

Giijs is a PlanAdapt Fellow, based in Paris, France.

He is a freelance international consultant in natural catastrophe modelling with extensive experience in Geographical Information Science (GIS) research, consulting and advisory work. From 2009 to 2019, he worked as the primary contact for GIS-related studies in CoreLogic, located in the European natural catastrophe modelling group in Paris. In addition to assisting in numerous modelling projects, he was a project leader and hydrological expert in several international projects, including the flooding risk assessment tool in Italy and the information management for the European projects.

He graduated  from the University of Southampton, UK in 2017, after writing a thesis about a Global Predictive Wildfire Model using data-driven Fuzzy Logic functions. After graduation, he continued studying the use of Earth Observations (EO) in natural catastrophe modelling to enhance the existing procedures with methods from the artificial intelligence paradigm. In his spare time, he is active in Omdena, a volunteering platform, to find solutions to real-world problems by combining AI/ML with EO.

He holds a Master’s degree in Geographical Information Science from the University of Southampton.
