Dave Ogier

Dave is a PlanAdapt Fellow, based in Cape Town, South Africa.

He is a climatologist, disaster risk and GIS specialist with over 15 years of professional experience working all scales from local site assessments to regional climate change impacts and with representative stakeholders at all levels in 57 countries in both the public and private sectors.

Dave’s multi-dimensional cross-speciality approach seeks to innovate in data-poor areas and improve information delivery for the understanding of social and economic development, environmental sustainability, and humanitarian resilience. The shift in the analysis to be more cognizant of the end-user needs facilitates clear messaging among stakeholders, lowers the technical barrier to entry and enables pragmatic-focused intervention while maintaining technical integrity.

Dave uses the latest climate models and analysis techniques to develop custom spatial and temporal analysis to build and strengthen climate rationales to be highly applicable and enhance the understanding of climate changes, local extremes, and associated impacts to be more tangible and relevant to the local context and livelihoods. This allows for greater confidence in designing and implementing practical interventions to adapt to these climate futures within the context of local vulnerability and risk. Dave’s current focus is in the climate adaptation funding sector and has worked on over 20 GCF projects with primary assessment geographies are Southern and East Africa, Latin and Central America, Southern Asia and the Western Pacific.

Dave has a masters degree in Geographical and Atmospheric Science from the University of Cape Town and is a Professional Natural Scientist with South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) and a registered Geomatic Professional with South African Geomatics Council (SAGC). Furthermore, he is registered with the Geo-Information Society of South Africa (GISSA) and the Disaster Management Institute of South Africa (DMISA).
